Historical Context

Kintsugi, "golden joinery", emerged in fifteenth century Japan, traditionally traced to the Ashikaga shogun Yoshimasa, who had a broken Chinese tea bowl repaired with iron staples and was so dissatisfied with the result that Japanese craftsmen developed the gold lacquer technique as an alternative. The philosophy of wabi sabi, the embracing of impermanence and imperfection, was the wider tradition in which kintsugi flourished.

The Reformed Earring sits in that lineage rather than in the European tradition of seamless restoration. The cracks are the design.

Symbolic Meaning

Reformation. The visible crack. Wabi sabi. Kintsugi. The beauty of the broken.

The Reformed Earring carries the spirit of kintsugi. The Japanese practice of mending broken ceramics with gold dust lacquer, so that the cracks become luminous.

The piece is a small argument with the perfectionist tradition. That what has been broken and rejoined is more interesting than what has stayed whole.

Wearers Intention

For the kintsugi minded. The wearers who have been broken and put themselves back. Not seamlessly, but visibly. Whose cracks are part of the design. The Reformed Earring Set is for that lineage of beauty.

Care Guide

Keep them clean: Regularly wipe down your gold-plated earrings with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dirt, oil, or sweat that can build up and cause discolouration.

Avoid water: Do not wear your earrings when swimming or showering, as exposure to water can cause the jewellery to tarnish more quickly.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid exposing your earrings to harsh chemicals such as perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions, as these can damage the plating and cause it to wear off.

Store them properly: When not in use, store your gold-plated earrings in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

Handle with care: Be gentle when handling earrings to avoid scratching or breaking the products.
