Historical Context

The Zweihänder, or two hander, emerged in early sixteenth century Germany as the largest of the longsword family. Up to 180cm long, weighing up to 4kg. It was carried by elite Landsknecht infantry, the Doppelsöldner ("double pay men"), who used it to break pike formations. The form survived as ceremonial weapons. The bearing swords of city guards and royal escorts. Long after it became impractical for combat. Several originals are now in the Royal Armoury in Stockholm.
