Historical Context

The diadem began in the Persian and Hellenic worlds as a strip of cloth or fine metal tied around the head. Alexander the Great adopted the Persian diadem after his conquest of Darius III in 331 BCE. His successors, the Ptolemies in Egypt, the Seleucids in Asia, the Antigonids in Macedon, made it the central marker of royalty across the Hellenistic world.

Roman emperors initially refused the diadem (Caesar's refusal of one is the most famous gesture in late republican politics), but by the third century CE Diocletian had adopted it openly, and it became the basis for the Byzantine and medieval European crown.

As an earring, the diadem motif appears in Greek goldwork from the third century BCE. The famous Hellenistic earrings of Eretria and Vergina, with linked rings and central drop pendants, are the formal ancestors of this pair.

Symbolic Meaning

The diadem. The Hellenistic crown. Linked authority. Public identity.

The diadem, from the Greek diadeo, "to bind around", was the simplest and oldest royal headband. To wear two linked diadems at the ears is to read as twice claimed. Of one's own house, and of one's own self.

Wearers Intention

For the heirs of Hellenistic queens. The diadem was the marker of monarchy in the Greek world after Alexander. Worn by Cleopatra Selene, by Berenice II, by Arsinoe. The earring carries that line forward in scaled down form.

For the wearer making a public claim. Not a discreet piece. Two linked hoops with a stone at the join. Designed to be seen and read.

Care Guide

Keep them clean: Regularly wipe down your gold-plated earrings with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dirt, oil, or sweat that can build up and cause discolouration.

Avoid water: Do not wear your earrings when swimming or showering, as exposure to water can cause the jewellery to tarnish more quickly.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid exposing your earrings to harsh chemicals such as perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions, as these can damage the plating and cause it to wear off.

Store them properly: When not in use, store your gold-plated earrings in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

Handle with care: Be gentle when handling earrings to avoid scratching or breaking the products.
