Historical Context

Serpent earrings appear in Hellenistic Greek and Egyptian goldwork from the third century BCE. Coiled gold serpents with garnet or emerald eyes were favoured by the Ptolemaic queens, including Cleopatra. The Romans adopted the form. Pompeii has yielded several pairs of imperial serpent earrings, now in the Naples Archaeological Museum.

The motif had a major Victorian revival, prompted by Queen Victoria's own engagement ring (an emerald eyed gold serpent, given by Albert in 1839). The Art Nouveau movement of the 1890s and 1900s elaborated the form in pieces by Lalique, Vever, and Mucha. The serpent has been continuous in jewellery for over two thousand years.

Symbolic Meaning

The Serpent. Asclepius. Wadjet. The ouroboros. Wisdom. Royalty. Healing.

The Serpent is read across nearly every world tradition as the bearer of wisdom and the agent of transformation. Egyptian Wadjet wears the pharaoh's crown. Greek Asclepius carries the rod of medicine. The Hindu kundalini is the coiled serpent of awakening. The Norse Jormungandr encircles the world.

The earring carries this oldest of motifs in paired form. Two serpents, one at each ear, in conversation.

Wearers Intention

For the wise ones in disguise. The ones whose intelligence is read as something else. Charm, intuition, mystery, danger. The serpent is the symbol of wisdom that does not announce itself. The earrings are for that quiet, lateral kind of intelligence.

For the healers. Doctors, therapists, midwives, hospice workers, herbalists. The snake of Asclepius has been the symbol of medicine for three thousand years. The earrings honour the work.

Care Guide

Keep them clean: Regularly wipe down your gold-plated earrings with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dirt, oil, or sweat that can build up and cause discolouration.

Avoid water: Do not wear your earrings when swimming or showering, as exposure to water can cause the jewellery to tarnish more quickly.

Avoid harsh chemicals: Avoid exposing your earrings to harsh chemicals such as perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions, as these can damage the plating and cause it to wear off.

Store them properly: When not in use, store your gold-plated earrings in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and other sources of heat.

Handle with care: Be gentle when handling earrings to avoid scratching or breaking the products.
