Bound Box Chain

The box link, also called the Venetian box, originated in fifteenth century Italian goldsmithing as a chain that could carry weight without distorting. It was favoured for ecclesiastical pendants (reliquaries, crosses, episcopal pectorals) because it sat flat against the chest and held its shape under heavier metalwork. The form spread across Renaissance Europe and remained the standard pendant anchor chain through the Baroque, Rococo, and Victorian periods. Modern Italian goldsmiths in the Vicenza region still produce them in the original technique.

The box link, a chain whose links are square in cross section, locked into one another like a series of small boxes, is the chain of long letters and locked drawers.

It catches light differently from a round cable chain, lies flat at the throat, and closes with a clasp the wearer trusts.

The box link is the chain that holds. Substantial enough to wear alone, made to anchor a pendant when the moment asks. The wearer who chooses this chain is choosing the piece that will carry many other pieces over time.
